In the past, popular science has disregarded the environment in the quest for new technology and solutions to everyday problem[s]. Science has generally been more concerned with producing results even at the environment’s expense. Goals of the environmental movement for years conflicted with those of the pop[u]lar science quest to be on the cutting edge in every aspect of life. However, in today’s society popular science has lent itself to the environmental movement. Millions of dollars have been invested in research, design, and marketing of environmentally safe products and solutions. With the recent energy crisis and the increased price of oil, the search for newer, better, and cleaner energy sources and solutions are at the forefront of modern science. The society of the 21st century has been obsessed with “Green Products.” These products are environmentally safe and/or have been made from recycled materials.

Many of the cleaning products that are sold around the world are quite toxic and harmful for the environment. Detergents, degreasers, stain removers, and pesticides are hazardous chemicals and they endanger the environment by contaminating the groundwater, lakes and oceans. They can be very toxic if they are ingested, absorbed through the skin, or inhaled. These cleaning products can cause illnesses that may only show signs years later. Furthermore, many homes dispose of these cleaning products in the trash and when these products make it to the landfill they leak out of their containers and pollute the soil.
However, science has seen the perilous affects of these products and has applied biology and chemistry to manufacture and produce environmentally safe chemicals. GreenWorks is one of the many companies at the forefront of producing environmentally safe products. GreenWorks['] mission is to create products that are made from biodegradable ingredients but still with the cleaning power of harmful Clorox. By using biodegradable ingredients, it helps to eliminate the harsh chemical fumes or residues.

Science is also helping improve recycling technology. The amount of waste that Americans produce[s ]each year is estimated to be about 222 million tons. Recycling helps to reduce landfills, prevent contamination, and save precious resources. More and more materials are being recycled that would normally end up in a land fills. Plastics and glass are being recycled in higher and higher numbers, as well as the more recent discovered technology of recycling all types of electronics. Recycling materials also helps to reduce the amount of green house gases that are in high concentrations and are dangerously impacting our ozone.

In recent years, people around the world have felt the financial toll and burden caused by the increased price of oil. Popular science felt a need to break the economy’s dependency on foreign oil and to do so they invested time and money int

The five renewable energy sources used most often are: biomass, hydropower, geothermal, wind, and solar. Renewable energy plays an important role in the supply of energy to the untied states.

In 2008, the amount of renewable sources in the USA reached a total of about 7.3 quadrillion. This number works out to be about 7% of all the energy used nationally. Of this 7%, about half of the renewable energy goes to producing electricity. When renewable energy sources are utilized the demand for fossil fuels is reduced therefore lowering the price and dependency. Unlike fossil fuels, non-biomass renewable energy sources (hydropower, geothermal, wind, and solar) do not directly emit greenhouse gases.

Renewable energy has historically been more expensive to produce and harness than fossil fuels. They are often located in difficult and remote areas; the expense of building power lines from these sources to the cities where the electricity is needed is quite expensive. The use of renewable sources is also limited by the fact that they are not always available — cloudy days reduce solar power; calm days reduce wind power; and droughts reduce the water available for hydropower.

The technology surrounding the use and attaining the energy from renewable fuels has grown more quickly in recent years. This is a result of the higher prices for oil and natural gas. Also there has been a number of State and Federal Government incentives, including the Energy Policy Acts of 2002 and 2005. Furthermore, the Obama administration has budgeted millions of dollars into research and design of renewable energy sources and other possible alternative energy sources.

Research will soon lead to technology that will help reduce the expense of going "Green" where it will soon be the financially smart way to go. Many homes are now being built and constructed out of recycled materials and with plans to have solar panels and rain water collection vats. More and more cars are on the road that are hybrids and can that run off of ethanol.green.jpeg Historically, science has been ignorant to the advantages of investing time and money to environmentally safe products and solutions. However the time has come where the importance of being environmentally friendly is of the highest priority in modern science and their advancement in future technology.
